Half of families take holidays in term-time...

Description

ABTA is advising parents to look at early booking offers as the cost of peak season holidays hits the headlines again.

A poll by TripAdvisor showed almost half (46%) of 2,000 parents quizzed in a survey admit they have taken their child on holiday during term-time to save money.

The survey also revealed more than half (53%) of British parents are spending less on family holidays in 2011 compared to 2010, as Government spending cuts are hitting their budgets.

A spokesman for ABTA said: ‘If you are looking for the best value and widest choice, book as early as possible.

‘Tour operators are the most family-friendly part of the industry, offering free child places and discounts for kids. Budget carriers don’t have child fares.’

He said it was an ‘economic reality’ that prices rise in the peak seasons because of supply and demand.

‘The only long-term solution is to have six-term school years and staggered holiday dates, which would spread out the demand,’ he added.

Emma O’Boyle, TripAdvisor spokesperson, said: ‘For many families, breaking the rules and taking their child out of school to avoid peak holiday costs is regarded as the only way they can afford a family holiday this year.’

Almost half of those who have taken term-time holidays, 47% claimed the school turned a blind eye and 46% said the school ‘wasn't happy’, but didn’t penalise them with fines.

She echoed ABTA’s advice, saying: ‘Parents trying to save money should look to take advantage of early booking discounts or, if there’s a larger group, consider a holiday rental option instead.’
